Owning a pet comes with many benefits, but it’s also a big responsibility! Besides keeping them happy and healthy, you must also clean up after them. If you want to avoid a serious carpet cleaning expedition, then keep reading for our best tips to keep your home as clean and allergen-free as possible!

How to Keep Your Home Fresh When Living with a Pet

Follow these tips to make sure your carpets stays fresh and clean. You can also read our previous post about the importance of improving your home’s air quality.

  • Develop regular grooming habits. A dirty dog or cat will transfer its filth to that carpet or couch it loves to lounge on. Even if you can’t see it, there can be particles of allergens, waste and dirt that attach to your pet’s coat and become trapped in the fibres of you carpet, mattress, or upholstery. Bathe them regularly and groom them to lessen the amount of hair that accumulates from shedding. One of our best practises is to keep a towel or microfibre cloth near the front door to wipe down their paws after every walk or romp in the yard. Even if your dog doesn’t look or smell particularly funky, it’s still a good idea to give them a good once over after long walks every season of the year.
  • Spot clean messes immediately. No matter how well trained your pet is, there will probably be one or more accidents on your carpet at some point. If you neglect to clean it right away then this can cause deep stains to settle, allows bacteria or mould to develop, and for foul odours to emerge over time. First, you need to pick up any solid debris using two pieces of cardboard to avoid pushing it further into the carpet. Then, soak up the liquid using paper towels. Dabbing with your hands or stepping on them will help absorb it as deeply as possible. Finally, use a mix of vinegar and water to clean the area. For urine, you may want to use an enzymatic cleaner that’ll get rid of any lingering urine smell which could signal to your dog that it’s okay to pee there again.
  • Choose the right vacuum. For best results, your carpet should be vacuumed on a weekly basis. Looking for the right vacuum? We recommend a vacuum cleaner that has a beater brush and a HEPA filter to really get deep grime and hair out of the carpet and to trap pet dander and dirt from being re-released into your home’s air.
  • Choose the right carpet. If you have pets, you can opt for a carpet made of stain- and odour-resistant nylon. Nylon is highly durable, affordable and stain-resistant.
  • Have your carpets cleaned regularly. At least once a year, have your carpets professionally cleaned to make sure that dirt, pet debris and grime that is stuck deep in the fibres is removed.

Dealing With Pet Hair

If you have a dog or cat that sheds a lot, you know how difficult it can be to get fur out of the carpet. Before you vacuum, sprinkle baking soda over the area to loosen the fur and wait a few minutes before vacuuming. Another option is to use a carpet rake to comb through the pile, removing much of the fur. When you vacuum, go over each area numerous times in different directions to get as much fur and dirt out as possible.
